Canned Biscuits

There are so many options for store bought canned biscuits, found in the refrigerated section.

Southern Style - Usually is buttermilk or butter flavored with some flaky layers. When fried it puffs up and can be easily split in half with a tender inside.

Flaky Layers - You’ll see lots of buttery delicate flaky layers. When fried it puffs up very thick, you can split them in half right before frying to reduce the size.

Traditional Homestyle- Its a classic tender biscuit. When fried it puffs up slightly with more of a soft and fluffy inside.

Popular brands are Pillsbury Grands, Immaculate Baking, Annie’s, Trader Joe’s and store brands.

How To Fry Biscuits

The the traditional way to fry biscuits is either deep fried or pan fried. They fry up golden brown, soft, tender and flaky.

Use a neutral oils like canola, vegetable or even shortening. You’ll want about 4-5 inches of oil for deep frying and 2-3 inches for shallow pan frying.

To deep fry keep the oil temperature at 325 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, for best results. Too low temperature the biscuits will soak up too much oil and too high it will brown too quickly. Fry about 2-3 minutes on each side.

Shallow pan fry on a low medium heat. They will have to fry a couple minutes longer to fully cook the inside.

Southern Fried Biscuits

Turning on your oven during the hot summer months is something I try not to do, especially in the southern region of the US. My suggestions for quick and easy biscuits is deep frying them. No need to heat up the whole kitchen.

Heat up that cast iron skillet with oil and fry these canned biscuits up. Then serve them along side your favorite southern dishes and homemade jam.

Step 3 - To defrost place them in the refrigerator on a plate or container in a single layer. Cover them with a lid or plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out. Let them fully defrost before using them in your recipes.
