Pineapple Jam vs. Pineapple Preserves

Pineapple jam has a smoother texture similar to jelly. Pineapple preserves have tiny chunks of pineapple, it really comes down to your preference of jam texture.

Two slices of toast on white plates. One on the left with pineapple jam and one on the right with pineapple preserves.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Fresh Pineapple

Fresh pineapple, especially in season will adds a great fresh flavor and consistency to the jam. Frozen and canned pineapple can be used as a substitute.

For canned pineapple make sure to fully drain the juice or syrup as much as possible.

Sugar

I prefer refined white sugar because it adds no additional color. Cane sugar or unrefined sugar can be used as a substitute.

Flavorful Additions

Lemon Juice - Add a touch of lemon juice, the acidity helps to cut the sweetness. Fresh lemon juice is best.

Ginger - If you love ginger as much as I do, it will give the preserve a pop of flavor. Fresh is preferred but ground ginger can be added in a pinch.

Spices - Sprinkle freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon for a warm flavor.

Extract - Lemon extract, vanilla extract, or coconut for an even more tropical taste.

Storage and Shelf Life

Make this pineapple jam and store it in an airtight container or mason jar for up to 3 months in the refrigerator.

For longer storage freeze it for up to 6 months.

A hand holding toast with the jam. Next to toast, butter, and loaf of bread.

How To Use Pineapple Jam

Homemade pineapple jam can be used for breakfast, savory dishes, and desserts.

For breakfast spread it on toast, biscuits, and pancakes.

As a glaze for oven-baked ham, pork chops, chicken, salmon, and shrimp.

Jazz up a store-bought bbq sauce or Asian chili sauce.

Have an extra sweet tooth, it's a great addition to tea cakes, cookies, and an ice cream topping.
