Why did this recipe go viral? This is one of those pasta recipes that can be made on a busy weeknight. Dump the ingredients into the dutch oven for a quick spaghetti dinner. The family will love it.
Dutch Oven Options
In the United States a dutch oven is a heavy pot with great heat retention and a tight fitting lid. It’s used on the stovetop and oven, made of cast iron, enamel glass, or stainless steel. I used a 5 quart lodge cast iron dutch oven.
Specifically for this recipe it does an acidic element, tomatoes. Tomatoes can breakdown the seasoned layer of cast iron or have a metallic taste if cooked too long.
Since the cook time is less than 30 minutes, using a well seasoned cast iron will have no issues. Check out the Lodge website for more information on cooking with acidic foods in cast iron.
Cast iron with an enamel glass coating or a light weight dutch oven will work great. A light weight dutch oven is a stainless steel pot with a heavy weight bottom and sides.
Ingredients and Substitutions
Ground Meat- Any ground meat would be delicious, beef, turkey, chicken, or Italian pork sausage.
Vegetables & Spices - Fresh chopped garlic and onion are best. Any of these vegetables can be omitted if you prefer. Add your favorite dried herbs or spice blends for an extra delicious meat sauce.
Jar of Tomato and Alfredo Sauce - Choose your favorite brand and flavor, I like a tomato basil and original creamy alfredo.
Cheese - Grated parmesan. To save time I used pre-shredded cheeses but shredding it from the block is better.
Pasta - Spaghetti is best, but you can substitute your favorite long or short pasta and it will still be delicious.
Tips and Suggestions
Substitute low sodium beef or vegetable broth for the water to add more flavor.
Add veggies like roasted red peppers, mushrooms, or spinach.
Love cheese? Add more like colby jack, mozzarella, American, queso, cheddar, velvetta, or gruyere.
Swap the ground beef for Italian sausage, ground turkey or chicken.
Add more meat or pasta to make a bigger portion. Don’t forget to add a more liquid.
