This easy Jiffy southern cornbread dressing is so moist and flavorful. An old fashioned southern classic staple that has flavors of onion, celery, sage, chicken broth and a touch of cream.

How To Make Jiffy Cornbread Dressing 

It starts by baking two boxes of jiffy corn muffin mix, then cooling and crumbling it. Next is sautéing the vegetables, aromatics and spices.

Mix together the cornbread, vegetables and spices, fully cooked meat of choice, with chicken broth and cream of chicken soup or heavy cream. 

Popular meat flavors are shredded chicken, sausage, smoked turkey and bacon.

The dressing is then baked to golden brown perfection and served with a spoon onto your dinner plate.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Cornbread - Two Box of Baked Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix using the package direction or substitute homemade cornbread. Cooled and cubed. Can 

Butter - Salted or unsalted will be delicious.

Cream - Heavy whipping cream or a can of condensed soup of choice. Popular choices are cream of chicken, mushroom, and celery. 

Broth - Chicken or vegetable flavored. You can used canned, carton, or bouillon, low sodium is best.

Vegetables - Fresh chopped garlic, onion, celery, and sweet peppers are best.

Spices - Poultry seasoning is the easiest spice blend to use. It’s a mixture of sage, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, nutmeg, and black pepper.  

Meat - Fully cooked sausage, shredded chicken, smoked turkey, or even bacon.

Meat Options

Fully cooked meat is almost essential to a soul food cornbread dressing. The most popular choice is chicken but sausage, turkey and bacon is delicious as well.

Chicken - Save time with fully cooked from the grocery store or cook at home. Breast, tenders, or thighs are popular options.

Sausage - You can find so many cooked and flavored options. From beef, turkey, pork, chicken and plant based. 

Turkey - Ground with seasonings like Italian or Smoked Turkey wings, neck and drumsticks. Make sure the meat is fully cooked, boiled and shredded. 

Pork- Salted, pork butt, chops and smoky bacon.

Tips & Suggestions

The jiffy cornbread and cooking the meat can be prepped up to 2 days in advanced. It will make it so easy to put together for the holidays or dinner. 

Use fully cooked rotisserie chicken or sausage to save time. 

Add an egg for extra flavorful and it’s a great binder.

Can used stale bread cubes or saltine crackers for a light almost stuffing like texture. 

If you like a crunchy textured dressing cook it until very gold brown to crisp it up.

Make Ahead and Leftovers

This recipe can be easily made ahead, prepped and baked up to 2 days before serving.

Store leftovers wrapped in an air tight container. It can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or frozen up to 3 months.  Easily reheated in the microwave or oven

Step By Step Directions and Photos

  1. Bake 2 boxes of jiffy corn muffin mix to the package directions. Let fully cool.

2. Crumble or cube the cornbread and place into a mixing bowl. Set aside.

3. Grease a 9x13 baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

4. Prep and chop the garlic, onion, celery, and bell peppers.

5. Grab the fully cooked meat, butter, vegetables, spices, and aromatics.

6. In a skillet on medium heat add the butter.

7. Then add the chopped vegetables, spices, and aromatics. Cook for 3-4 minutes.

8. Add the cooked meat. Cook for an additional 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

9. Grab the chicken broth and heavy cream or condensed soup.

10. In a mixing bowl add the crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables and meat, and heavy cream or condensed soup.

11. Add about 2 cups of the chicken broth. Mix well.

12. Pour additional chicken broth until the mixture is soft and very moist. Add salt and pepper to taste.

15. Place in oven and bake covered for 30 minutes and uncovered for 15-20 or until golden brown.

16. Remove from the oven. Let cool for about 30 minutes before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 Boxes Jiffy Cornbread Mix (Baked, Cooled, and Cubed) Baked To Package Directions
  • 2-3 cups Cooked Sausage, Shredded Chicken or Smoked Turkey
  • 1 ¼ cup Heavy Cream or 10.5 oz Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup
  • 2-3 cups Chicken Broth
  • ½ cup Butter
  • 2 ½ cups Chopped vegetables of choice (1 cup onion, 1 cup celery, and ½ cup bell pepper)
  • 2 teaspoon Poultry Seasoning or Spices and Herbs of Choice
  • Dried parsley for garnish, Salt and Pepper
  • Cooking Oil or Spray

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  • In a sauté pan on medium heat add butter and chopped vegetables. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add poultry seasoning, aromatics and cooked meat. Cook for an additional 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl add the crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables and meat, and heavy cream or condensed soup.
  • Add about 2 cups of the chicken broth. Mix well. Pour additional chicken broth until the mixture is soft and very moist. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Place dressing mixture into the greased 9x13 baking dish. Cover with foil.
  • Place in oven and bake covered for 30 minutes and uncovered for 15-20 or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven. Let cool for about 30 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley and Enjoy.
